Wild Onion

Allium family

TL;DR: Pungent, resilient little bastards.

Since it’s the namesake of this blog, I had to share my recent findings. These onions were found in small 6-inch-wide clusters in the bend of a creek here in Central Texas. I was surprised by the density of these clusters on the forest floor and could almost make out a pattern as to how they continuously passed their seeds downstream during rains and floods.

I personally find this variety of wild onion to be more pungent than a typical yellow or white onion gram-for-gram, mush like shallots. A noticeable ‘bite’. Another distinction is that these leaves aren’t hollow tubes like green onions—they feel thicker and more substantial. Tougher.

All in all, they make a fine addition to tomato basil soup and fried eggs.
